The novel has five main characters  and all in a way connected with each other. The main character and the hero of the novel is Gabriel Oak and the heroine of the novel is Bathsheba Everdene. The novel revolves the lives of the characters.

Here in this story is all about the love triangle between the characters. In the starting of the novel we see that Oak meets with Bathsheba and he fall in love with her beauty. After they meet several time he comes to know that she has only one fault it is her 'Vanity' with her beauty.

Oak was very successful farmer in the village and people gave him respect. One day Oak was feeling ill and that time Bathsheba saved his live, so he thought that she loves him. Oak went to Bathsheba's aunt with the proposal of marriage, but she refuses and then she also said that she doesn't love him so she can't marry with him. She also in a search of man who has good status into society and also pamper her, but Oak would not able to do that ever.

Bathsheba was very ambitious lady, she has left town to manage the farm which is got from inheritance. At that night Oak has suffer with the tragic accident, in that he loose his all sheep and he becomes poor. Bathsheba has also cheated Boldwood just for fun, he was really in love with her. There were many people who want Bathsheba but she was fall in love with Troy, who was already love with Fanny, Bathsheba's servant.

Bathsheba secretly marry with Troy, after some time passed she comes to know that Troy falls in love with Fanny. Bathsheba is nothing for him. After some days Fanny found dead with her child, at that time Troy accepted his true love with Fanny and then left town.

Troy was  missing for some of the months so ultimately he declared as dead. Other side Boldwood forced Bathsheba to coming into party and when he gives her ring for engagement, at that time Troy was come and Boldwood shot him, then he also get dead. So at the end of the novel Oak and Bathsheba got married.

Here in the novel Hardy beautifully describes the human emotions. How the characters playing emotionally with each other, Bathsheba's aunt playing with Oak emotion, Bathsheba playing with Boldwood emotion and  Troy playing with the Fanny and Bathsheba emotion. So with that novel converts into tragic novel.
